It’s important for kids to have toys that that represent all races in order to normalize diversity and promote inclusivity. Representation matters. Here are some of our favorite toys, dolls, games, puzzles, and craft supplies that promote diversity.

Petit Collage Magnetic Play Scene Outer Space

We love Petit Collage for their sustainability ethos and eye-catching designs. Their magnetic sets are extremely popular in our house and this space set is great for keeping younger kids entertained. They also have a similar Pop-out and Build Space Play Set.

Melissa & Doug School Bus

This chunky classic wooden school bus rolls easily along and comes with seven people who can be loaded in through the door that opens and closes, or through the roof. Great for open-ended, imaginative play.

This brand makes the cutest peg dolls with an insane variety of different races, occupations, and costumes to choose from. They can even make custom orders. I adore the “activist” set of trailblazing women pictured above.

PUZZLES & GAMES

Game on Family Feelings and Dealings

This emotions and empathy card game not only helps kids develop social emotional learning, but the characters on the laminated cards include kids in a variety of races.

Mudpuppy Little Feminist Jigsaw Puzzle

Based on the best-selling kid’s books, this 500-piece puzzle depicts trailblazing women throughout history. Best for ages 8+.

ThinkFun Roll & Play

This is my toddler’s favorite game right now. Players act out the different actions depicted on the cards that feature kids of all races. You can play it by rolling the dice and choosing a corresponding card, or by just using the deck of cards on their own (which is great for throwing into a purse or diaper bag for instant entertainment).

Orchard Toys Bus Stop Board Game

We love Orchard Toys games (Shopping List is another favorite) and Bus Stop is fun and features a diverse cast of characters. Kids drive their bus around the board trying to pick up as many passengers as possible.

QUOKKA Human Body Parts Wooden Puzzles

Great for toddlers learning about their bodies, this two-pack of wood puzzles covers body parts, muscles, organs, and the circulatory system.

eeBoo Create a Story Cards, Fairy Tale Mix-Up

These cards feature characters of different races and are a great tool for young kids to exercise their creativity while making up a story using the illustrations on the card. Instructions are included for various games and activities to play with the cards. If your kids aren’t into fairy tales, the Volcano Island edition is great as well.

Jess Brown Rag Dolls

While on the expensive side, these beautiful handmade rag dolls are sure to be treasured for years and generations to come. There are three skin tones available and any doll may be ordered in any skin tone.

Meri Meri Dolls

One of our favorite brands, Meri Meri, does a few lovely dolls of color. “Ruby,” “Mia,” and “Lila” are all great options and the best part may be all of the fabulous Meri Meri doll costumes and accessories that are available separately.

Manhattan Toy “Harper” Doll

For a great budget-friendly option that looks almost handmade, Manhattan Toy has their adorable “Harper” doll who also comes with her own teddy bear.

Mon Ami “Cookie” Doll

Another well-crafted yet affordable doll, this beauty smells as sweet as she looks with a scented drawer satchet. The brand has a few other options for dolls of color such as their “Paige” princess doll and the “Bailee” small ballerina doll.
